There are many things to consider when moving into a care home and often, it’s a process that involves the whole family. Find out what the care home journey looks like and what help is available by reading more below.

Step One - Consider the options

If you’ve noticed a change or decline in your family member and they are no longer able to live at home, even with support, talk to your general practitioner (GP) for advice on what the options are.

Step Two - Apply for a needs assessment

If your loved one can no longer care for themselves at home, the first step is to apply for a needs assessment. This can be done through Helath NZ Te Whatu Ora, a Service Coordination Agency (NASC) or they can be assessed by a specialist while a patient in a public hospital.

The needs assessment will determine what level of care your loved one needs.

Step Three - Choose the right care home facility for your loved one

Once you know what level of care (rest home, hospital, dementia care) your loved one needs, the next step is to find the care home in your area which provides that level of care.

Check to see if you are entitled to any financial assistance or subsidies to help cover the cost of the care. For more information on the Residential Care Subsidy and Accommodation Supplement click here.

Enliven Southland has four care homes, three in Invercargill (Peacehaven Village, Vickery Court and Walmsley House) and one in Gore (Resthaven Village).

Step Four - Sign an admission agreement

The care home will provide you with an admission agreement to sign. This sets out what the care home will provide and what your responsibilities are.  It will include the cost of care, how payments are made, what services are included, and any costs associated with additional services.

Step Five - Moving in

Moving into a care home can be a stressful and emotional experience for all involved. The more information you have about what to expect, the easier this process can be.

We strongly encourage you to ask our friendly staff any questions or share any concerns you may have so we can help make the transition as easy as possible.

Cost of Care

Once a person has been needs assessed and requires care in a rest home, they and their families may have questions around the funding for care. There are several options which are available to them.
